To receive it you need to
a) add that person/phone to your contacts
b) go into the settings, general, airdrop and turn on 'receive from anyone for 10 minutes'

So i did experiment adding my work phone to my personal contacts and vice versa and haven't got it to work but turning the receiving device to 'receive from everyone for 10 minutes' did.
My cousins cant send me pictures and videos on airdrop but i can send them
