Hello veburke,

To get the automatic backup to work, the device needs to be locked, connected to Wi-Fi and connected to the charger. For most people this will occur at night when they're sleeping as that's generally when these three conditions are met.

If the automatic backup is not happening when these conditions are met, you'll also want to make sure you have enough storage available in iCloud to do the backup.

You can view the available iCloud storage in Settings > name at the top > iCloud > Manage Account Storage.

You can view the amount of storage that is needed to complete the next backup in Settings > name at the top > iCloud iCloud Backup > Device name > Next Backup Size.

Manage your iCloud storage

Cheers!

Hey veburke,

To clarify, after turning the backup off and then on again, what happens when you try to backup to iCloud? For example, is there any specific error or message you receive?

You can see tips for how to address an issue backing up to iCloud depending on the message you receive here:
