Maybe try turning off True Tone is available.
Or disabling Night Shift. Use Night Shift on your Mac - Apple Support
If that does not help, then you need to provide more detailed information.
What year model Mac mini and what macOS version is it running?
What external display and how is it connected to the Mac mini?

You're welcome.
So Night Shift was the problem?
If not, then you need to look for an ambient light setting in the Samsung TVs on-screen menu.
You will need to use the external displays on-screen menu to adjust the brightness.
Sorry, do you you mean the brightness control for the monitor?
Great that seems to allow me to modify the brightness but is there any way to stop my Mac auto dimming due to the background light changes? Seems I have no control over auto dimming, many thanks
Go to Apple > System Settings > Displays > Turn off the switch for 'Automatically adjust brightness"
System Settings > Displays > there is no switch for "Automatically adjust brightness"
Hi Thanks, it's a Mac mini 2 running Ventura 13.4. Its is connected to a Samsung smart TV via an HMDI cable. Night Shift is off. many thanks
Ah thanks man, just got a new Samsung HDR 4k and I was really struggling with getting it bright enough. Flipping off that sensor worked. Thanks!
You're welcome.
