transfered my photos to my pc windows 10 but aae files are not opening how to convert it

Has Sonoma changed how photos are downloads and stored ? I download my photos from my iPhone to the iMac photos folder. To enable me to see them on a Windows PC, I copy the imported photos to a USB stick and upload to Windows. This is a process I have used several years. Windows now says it doesn't recognise file format of JPEG - the photo tile says something like ._IMG_9999.JPG and won't show or open the photo. Is this a bug or do I have to find work around? Any advice? The new photo does not show the meta data or GPS details.
