iMessage silenced after leaving sleep mode

I use sleep mode overnight while I set my alarm. This silences all of my notifications, which is what I expect.

When my alarm goes off, the phone exits sleep mode and I can start to receive notifications. So far this is all working as expected.

However, when some tries to message me on iMessage, they receive the note that I have my notifications silenced and they have to chose to notify me or not. This is not what is expected. This issue also appears to be intermittent and happens maybe once a week.

iPhone 8, iOS 14

If your iPhone's iMessage notifications are silenced after leaving sleep mode (also known as Do Not Disturb or Screen Time modes), there could be a few reasons for this. Here's what you can do to troubleshoot:

  • Check Do Not Disturb Mode:
    • Go to "Settings" -> "Do Not Disturb" and ensure that it's turned off.
    • Make sure the "Scheduled" option is off as well.
  • Check Focus/Do Not Disturb Mode in Control Center:
    • Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to access Control Center.
    • Check if the crescent moon icon (Do Not Disturb) or the Focus mode icon is highlighted. If it is, tap on it to turn it off.
  • Check Your Silent Switch:
    • On the left side of your iPhone, check if the silent switch is on (orange color is visible). If it is, flip the switch to turn it off.
  • Check iMessage Notification Settings:
    • Go to "Settings" -> "Notifications" -> "Messages".
    • Ensure that "Allow Notifications" is turned on.
    • Also, check the alert settings underneath. Make sure the alert type isn't set to "None," and also that "Sounds" is set to a tone of your choice.
  • Restart Your iPhone:
    • Sometimes, restarting your device can solve minor software issues. To do this, hold the power button and volume down button simultaneously until you see the "slide to power off" option. Slide to power off, wait for the device to fully shut down, then press and hold the power button to turn it back on.
  • Update iOS:
    • Check if there are any available software updates for your iPhone. You can do this by going to "Settings" -> "General" -> "Software Update". If an update is available, back up your device and then install the update.
  • Reset All Settings:
    • If nothing else works, you could try resetting all settings on your iPhone. Please note that this will reset all system settings to default, but it won't delete any data or apps.
    • To reset all settings, go to "Settings" -> "General" -> "Reset" -> "Reset All Settings." You'll need to enter your passcode to confirm this action.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be a more complex software issue, or even a hardware issue, and you may need to contact Apple Support for further assistance.
