Is there a way to stop Apple Wallet from opening automatically when near a paying terminal.

I wouldn’t mind it, but i have to give my phone to a bus driver so he could read my bus ticket’s QR code. As the payment terminal is situated near to the QR-code reader device on the same console, sometimes it takes 10 or even 20 seconds to get it done. It is annoying to the driver and to the passengers, too. Please help.

I had the Double-Click Side Button setting On. I also tried with Off. This setting has no effect in the Apple Wallet's behaviour of popping up by itself when brought closer to an NFC reader.

In other words, this behaviour cannot be controlled by user at the moment. That's the whole reason of this thread. (and there are other threads like this if you search for it).

Same issue, traveling abroad and making multiple bookings that e-mail PdF QR code tickets. They have other monthly passes and app for frequent users, but I do not want to download and register for every app where I will just visit once. Opening the pdf QR code on email and scan, then Wallet opens and QR code goes to background. Might be how Apple intended it but still is annoying...

Yes, it’s exactly the way it’s supposed to work. It’s not considered safe to use PDF’s QR codes for items that have value. I’m surprised a company expects you to do that. If the tickets were in Apple Wallet, where they’re safe and secure, Apple’s implementation would work fine.

On a side note, I download and delete apps all the time to meet my travel needs.

can 100% relate to the issue and the annoyance: flight back from svalbard - ticket by norwegian airline as pdf. all in hurry and i was not able to scan the barcode in the pdf because immediately wallet pops up on top😫. my sons old iphone was the solution as he is too young for apple pay. really ****** to not being able to stop the iphone from doing it although paying a fortune😢

Rather than spend time and energy wanting Apple to modify iPhones, essentially billion+ devices, why doesn’t the transit company support one standard, NFC?

I don’t expect an answer, just an understanding of my logic and how technology is supported. I’m not going to argue the expense of supporting two systems etc. But QR codes are not the future. I doubt Apple will make a move backwards to support a technology that is not the future of payment systems.

However, there’s nothing wrong with pleading your case to Apple. Apple welcomes your feedback, but regrets they cannot respond individually to those sharing their feedback.

Why are you continuously defending Apple in this thread? You aren’t an official Apple representative, right? You add little to this conversation.

We are reporting a serious issue. In a perfect world every company would be 100% compatible with Apple (and Google) technologies. But that’s not how the world works. Our iPhones prevent us from using many ticket scanners. And it’s easier for Apple to add a fix for this than requiring many different manufacturers to change their ticket tech.

Companies invest in ticket tech, which generally has to be used for multiple years, before it can be updated.

Maybe they bought the tech before Apple Wallet was a thing.

And though not the most fancy, the QR code approach works for many people. They don’t even need a mobile device. They can print it on paper and take it with them.

And while many people may like Wallet getting opened automagically, I certainly do not. What if I only wanted to use my iPhone’s flash light to view the instructions on the ticket machine and it triggers the Wallet? I prefer actually opening it myself.

It doesn’t matter if the company wants to use QR codes. Apple should prevent that its devices perform undesired behaviours. And the apple wallet always kicking in no matter what, without the possibility to cancel this behaviour, is a design flaw. And it’s Apple’s responsibility to fix it.

This is a user-to-user forum. There are no official Apple representatives who will be replying.

You're "reporting" it to your fellow users. So, don't be surprised if fellow users respond. If you don't like those responses, feel free to ignore them. But trying to dictate how other users should respond will rarely produce the results you'd like.

So, Apple should support older technology no matter what? Is that your position? If not, at what does a company drop support?

I see basically one thread on this and one to two dozen posters wanting QR support. How about support for the first iPhone and 2G cellular service, or 3G service that’s still used in a few countries? If Apple continued to support what other people want, you wouldn’t mind paying the extra for a modem that doesn’t benefit you, would you?

I think you see my point. So far I’ve seen one use case. Do you have a use case that millions could benefit from or is it a convenience for a few thousand, like supporting 3G cellular?

So, the behavior that you object to is a convenience for millions around the world. I see far more people traveling by plane, and subways that use NFC for convenience and speed through turnstiles. All the transit company needs to do is add a button to add the QR code to your Wallet. This is not a monstrous undertaking.

Why isn’t it the transit companies responsibility to adapt to modern technology?

You are completely missing the point and getting wrong this conversation.

The issue is not to “support older technology” as you claim. The issue is that apple wallet kicks in automatically without possibility to block this behaviour. Period.

This is neither a question about technology, as QR and NFC are not comparable as they are used for different purposes, regardless that in this case they are.

This is neither Apple offering better technology, but Apple impeding that QR codes are used.

And finally, you are again wrong when you say that the “behavior that you object to is a convenience for millions around the world”, for nobody is objecting to that behaviour (which most of us use) but objecting to the fact that the user is incapable to stop that behaviour when desired, as it should be if Apple did this properly.

Please focus.
