What does this apple watch software update screen mean?

I want my watch to update its software during the day, not at night, because I want the date it collects during my sleep. But I am confused by this screen (below); does it mean that I am already on watchOS9.6, or does it mean that the update to watchOS9.6 is pending? I have seen very briefly a message about checking for an update, but if it is displaying whether or not I need an update it is too brief to see. I have also never seen an update in progress message - let alone an update in progress progress bar. And, yes, the watch has been on its charger and near the phone which has a good Wi-Fi connection.

Thanks very much MacMikeInOK! I guess I have to admit to being pretty dense. But it would have been nice if the text was "Click here to begin installing WatchOS 9.6". To me the "Install" text looks like just a title for the text underneath it. Whatever ... , but thanks very much again for the right answer and for such a prompt response.

Glad I was able to help!

I agree that, sometimes, Apple could do better on some of its wording (or lack thereof).

The biggest ommission Apple makes, in my opinion, is not stressing nearly enough how important it is to write down a device's passcode...and Apple ID/password. If someone forgets all three of these, all they have are expensive paper weights.

Though I'm sure some of them are from crooks, a day doesn't go by on these Community forums where someone is asking what to do if they forgot their device passcode.

I suspect very few posts about passcodes or Apple ID and Activation Lock are from the thieves and criminals. Most are from innocent and unsuspecting victims who purchased the stolen item in the belief they were getting a bargain.

Bob, that's a good question! I honestly don't know the answer to it.

I do know that when UPS "lost" my new MBA a month or two ago, Apple Senior Advisors were able to determine it had not been activated, as Apple records the serial number of the device when it's ordered online. And it was amazing that, after I told UPS my MBA hadn't been activated and may well be in their facility somewhere, only 30 minutes later I received an email telling me it would be delivered the next day.😀
