Follow-up email will not stop!!!

I see a zillion people asking how to turn this off and the only answers are to go to Mail Settings>General and not have "Enable follow up suggestions" checked.

I do not, and have never, had it checked on my Macs or iPhone and yet I constantly get this and it is beyond annoying.

I use my inbox as a to-do list and do not want emails showing up at the top that turn out to be some old email.

There must be a way to stop this besides unchecking that box.

Anyone else having this issue or know how to make this stop besides telling me to uncheck a box that is already not checked? (LOL)

Thanks!

I wish someone would give us an answer, which I have never gotten. The answer above makes zero sense. I am running fifty different email accounts and am managing several businesses. Who has time to make a fake test user profile and then mess up one of my email accounts by adding it to that, then sit there for over a week (!) goofing around waiting for the email to "follow up?"

Seriously?

I've been a Mac user for over 30 years and rarely have a beef with it, but having these odd "helpful" settings should not be the default - but require people who want them to have to go out of their way to initiate it.

In my case, I use my inboxes as my "to do" and having emails suddenly pop back up at the top of the list makes me think someone has given me an answer or action I've been awaiting when instead its this irritating nag that the computer thinks I should "follow up" on something.

It reminds me of that awful Microsoft paper clip that demanded to tell you how to write a memo or letter.

As annoying as it is, I did start doing what Sue D suggested above. Highlight the message in the inbox and go up to the top of all the Mac Mail menus. Choose Message>Ignore Follow Up

After having done this a few times when they pop up, they seem to have subsided.

I don’t know if it is “teaching” it to pay attention to the setting we already have or I’ve just not had that many.

At least it makes my blood pressure go back down to get rid of it right away (LOL)!

Good luck!

I have been having the same problem for the last 4 months on my iPhone, exclusively. It does not happen on my MacBook Pro 14”/M1, or my iPad Pro M2. The sent mail appearing in the Mail.app appears and then disappears in spite of having the “Follow up suggestions” turned off. This is not a server issue at all, as I do not see these sent mail messages in the Gmail app or web interface, or in any other email clients. It seems like there is some conflicting setting or memory leak issue that is causing suggestions to be given even when the option is off.

As for the test profile suggestion, I am not at all sure why that method will help anything. @Soosie_J215, do you think there is some conflicted extension such that safe mode boot will help?

Hi there EdgemontFarm,

We have some suggested steps to narrow down why you are still getting those follow up emails even after confirming you do not have "Follow Up Suggestions" enabled. First, we'd recommend testing for those follow up emails while your Mac is booted to safe mode.

Use safe mode on your Mac

If the issue persists, the next step will be to create a test user profile, log in to is (configure that email account again), then test for the follow up emails. This will narrow down if there is something specific to your user profile, as opposed to a login item or system issue with safe mode. Reply back with how it goes.

Change Users & Groups settings on Mac

Best regards.

What?! There is no such thing.

Thanks for this! At least it is something!

But more preferably Mail should follow what the Setting is - which is to have Followup Suggestions unchecked.

I NEVER go up to the top Menus of the screen - who wants to have to do that? At the very least if this is the only solution, they could at least add it to the Mail Toolbar.
