I am trying to prevent my iPhone 12 battery from draining so quickly. I have done all the recommended things like reducing the screen brightness and closing background apps, etc. I just want to know if I should also turn off wifi when my phone id not in use. Thanks.

It's not necessary as when the phone is locked (not being used), Wifi automatically disconnects until the phone is awakened. The only exception would be if the phone is plugged in to charge, it will stay connected to Wifi in order to backup. The Wifi radio doesn't actually use a lot of power, so turning it off won't make much difference.

A good reason to NOT turn it off is Wi-Fi is critical to Find My when the phone is not outdoors with a clear view of the sky. If you lose the phone when Wi-Fi is off you will not be able to track it.
You can try this if you want, but I think that the net gain will be about zero. It won't hurt to try, but I don't think it will really help.
