Slow 27" iMac

My iMac works normally for about 20 minutes then slows to a crawl. If I shut down and restart the same cycle recurs.

To follow up on what Mr. Jones said, please also tell us

  • the amount of memory/RAM you have
  • the amount of free storage you have available on the drive (shown to the right side of the drive icon)

Slow performance can sometimes be due to not having enough RAM – or to filling the drive nearly to capacity. As you get close to filling your startup drive completely, the lack of free space for the Mac to work with may make the performance of the machine drop off a cliff…

Let's start by learning more from you about this iMac. 27-inch model have been in production since 2009 in about a dozen variants, and that hugely affects how we guide you.

Please do "About this Mac..." from you Apple menu and:

1) from the opening tab, tell us what that shows for "sub-model" and mac OS version:

2) While "About" is still open, click its "Storage" tab and tell us what the text under your hard drive icon shows:

Please DO NOT post any serial numbers for security reasons.

We may need more depending on your response but this will get the ball rolling.
