Two $600 repairs to my mac in less than a year

last December my mac would not charge or turn on so I took it to the genius bar and they fixed it for $500. This July the same thing happened and they said that it would cost me $600 to fix it now. My Mac is only from 2019 but I cannot afford the repair and do not want to invest in a machine if it is just going to break again. I asked If I could trade it in for anything and they said because it won't turn on it is worth nothing. I am a student and I really cannot afford a new laptop straight out of pocket, am I entitled to any sort of compensation?

Unfortunately the 2019 models seem to have a higher incident of Logic Board failures compared to other models (especially the 16" model). Or perhaps you have an external device which is faulty and is causing a Logic Board failure. If funds are tight, then I would advise against the repair because of the higher incident of Logic Board failures for the 2019 models. The money you would spend on repairs would be better applied to another laptop (new or used), but you must be very careful purchasing a used computer. So far my M2 laptop has been working well. I haven't had to work on too many Apple Silicon Macs to see how well they are holding up yet since our organization has not had Apple Silicon Macs for very long.

Compensation, no.

I would not buy a Mac today without buying the AppleCare+ which adds 2 yrs to the 1-yr warranty.

You have a limited 60 days to purchase Apple Care+ after a new purchase...

If you have AppleCare+ it will cover a large portion of accidental damage as well.

This also gives you the option to extend the warranty annually after the initial AppleCare+ expires

Purchase the new coverage within 30 days after your original Applecare+ coverage ends.

This does nothing for your current situation however....

Sorry to hear stories like this...

Compensation...no.

Luck of the draw, or bad luck of the draw in your case.

You do not say what "My Mac is only from 2019" this is exactly.

I continue to have AppleCare+ warranty on my 16" 2019 MacBookPro16,1

if you buy another new Mac it maybe worth factoring in the extended warranty in the event of a repeated catastrophic failure like yours.

If you made the decision to NOT pay for the extended warranty, you gambled that you would not need any repairs. You made a decision (wittingly or unwittingly) to bear the cost of repairs during the extended warranty period yourself.

When facing a problem later, the correct cost calculation is:

Example Total retail cost of repair: US$800

less Example amount you saved US$380

by NOT purchasing a service agreement

Effective incremental cost: US$420

PLUS the amount you saved by not buying the Service contract, which now must be spent as well.

I had the logic board in my 2016 MBP replaced three years ago at a cost of $592US.

If it ever fails again, the Mac gets recycled. There come s point where I'd be throwing good money after bad and my limit is $592US.

Once the cost to repair reaches half (or more) of the cost of a new, or newer unit whatever it is, it's time to replace.

I hear you on your finances, but what do you expect this community to do about that? You can seek help from local services that help those in need, use a library's computers maybe, borrow from a friend or family or maybe even buy a $300 Windows laptop in the interim between Macs. They are out there. maybe not new but it's an option.
