mac air display

My laptop is not the default display any more when I plug in the HDMI. I can't figure out how to make it default so I can use my computer. The external monitor is blank so my laptop isn't workable when plugged in to the HDMI.

Reset external display settings Hi there, I'm trying to connect an external display to my MacBook Air. When plugged in through the dongle, the display is registered and appears in the display settings, however the monitor is just black. Whilst trying to fix this I enabled the "use this monitor as main display" checkbox, and now whenever I plug the monitor in, my mac's screen is unusable and the monitor stays black. Is there a way I can clear the display settings cache so that this isn't used as the main display when I plug it in? I already tried deleting /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/windowserver(UUID).plist ... but this made no difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

External Monitor Display Settings Resetting I am using a 16" MacBook Pro M1Pro and I am having issues with my Mac going to sleep and then when woken up all the desktops, apps, settings, and even sometimes the arrangement of the monitors to the laptop and the orientation (I have a monitor at 90 degrees) are all messed up. I am currently using one 90 degree monitor and one normal. Can you please tell me if it's possible to lock these settings so it always returns to the default? Especially since I will sometimes need to unplug my Mac and don't want to go through the trouble of setting it up each time. Thanks!

Try and go to system settings>displays to manage things, If your external display remains blank it could be that there Is an issue with your external display or the connection
