ipad keeps restarting, i can't update it

i have an old ipad mini 4 currently on ios 11.3.1 and stopped using it years ago because it randomly restarts after about 3 minutes of being on.

i've seen people say "update your ipad", but there's no way for me to update it due to it turning off and restarting even when the ipad itself isn't being used.

i tried hooking it up to my macbook to update it from there, but it restarts before it can finish the update through my laptop, even when the screen is off. what can i do? is the ipad just unusable?

Hello BoxedGum,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here.

It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting so far. At this point, we would recommend that you bring your iPad in for a physical inspection at the nearest Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area, if service is available in your region. This will let a certified technician take a look at your iPad in person to see what might be going on here and to help you get it resolved. Based on the age of the device, it's possible that there may be a battery issue at play here preventing the iPad mini from staying powered on at length.
