Location Services not working on iPhone

My Iphone11 Pro got problems with Location Service after updating to the latest IOS 16.6. Even if I try to reset Location Service, restart apps or restart the device. Seems that all my apps that using Location Service fail to get location and get stuck. For example, Weather App, Yr App (another weather app) , and Google Map. Please consider fix this error ASAP.

Guys, I contacted Apple support. At least mine was solved with below steps.

Please try yourself with force restart the iPhone.

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

Please make sure to press the volume up quickly then release it. then do the same with volume down button. Then long press the power button for at least 30 seconds.

Yeah same here. iPhone SE 2020 version. Update to 16.6 the other day. All weather and map apps have been unusable since. Anything that needs my location has not been able to locate me. From bird song identifiers to Google Maps. It’s all totally borked. No amount of resetting, reinstalling or off and on againing works.

This is super urgent issue. How to let Apple knows this issue. I use iPhone XS Max.

I have same issue after upgrade to ios16.6. All applications using current location don’t work anymore. For example weather, google map, apple map. I can’t navigate using any map application.

Please solve this sooner. I need to drive a car. I can’t downgrade ios too since I don’t have any backup on iCloud. Reboot doesn’t help.

Some other issue is my background photo on phone will be gone after a while. It will come back after reboot but will be gone soon.

How is everyone getting on? Have you managed to fix it?

I contacted Apple support in the end. They told me to factory reset my phone. I did that on Wednesday (5 days ago) and not had any problems since. Previously I had to reset network and location settings every day.

Factory reset might be the best way to resolve this for you all.

Also, turns out my battery health is down to 80% and Apple said that is when it can start to fail and location services can be affected by the degrading battery.

Hi Guys,

After upgrade to IOS16.6 situation, the location service was gone as you know. Before I did the following, I need to reset my network setting every time I need to use GPS and location services.

I finally sacrificed myself by doing factory reset.

This seems to work fine now for 4 days already.

Firstly I did a full backup 140GB to my PC since I don't have enough iCloud storage.

Secondly I restore my backup from PC to iPhone.

Of course there are some drawbacks.

For my case, all my Apple Wallet credential is gone because it was factory reset. All my Bank apps need to re-login and activate face id again.

I see some differences in User Interface in IOS 16.6 that I didn't see after I do an upgrade from 15.6.1. This seems to have some more features which are not seen in case of upgrade. It shows all possible features.

Battery life seems to decrease more than before 10-20%.

So think about it and decide if you wanted to do factory reset or not. Good Luck.

I hope you haven't yet try resetting the network.

Apologies to others too. I was too hurry to conclude that the issue can be resolved. I just wanted to tell what I found, but later it seems the location service is not working again.

This is what I tried.

  1. reset network.
  2. reset location.
  3. disable Find My
  4. reboot the unit.

So, no solution yet. Interestingly, why does it happen to only somebody. I asked someone who did the IOS upgrade to 16.6. They don't have issue.

For me the GPS follows my location for a few seconds then just stays stuck even though I’m driving and still moving. It moves after a few minutes and refreshes to my current location. I’ve been missing a lot of exits and turns from this :( I’ve made sure each time that I have cellular data working and that there’s enough signal for the area I’m in. That’s never the issue though and it’s always the GPS not working.

I am having the exact same issues and have spent hours at the Genius Bar trying everything that's been mentioned in this forum. Nothing works - or, I should say, it works for a brief time then stops again - no maps, directions, location, etc. Affects Find My and other important apps like Uber and Lyft. This is happening with 3 of our 7 family members, but the non-affected ones have not upgraded to 16.6. I also upgraded to 16.6.1 and nothing. Heading to the Apple Store right now for a replacement phone, but not hopeful as they already replaced the insides of my current phone. I have a 13 Pro. While this doesn't seem like its affecting millions - it is HUGELY SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM for those who are affected. None of the Geniuses have a solution. How do we elevate this to Apple?

Again, I have spent hours and hours on with tier 2 support, who are talkign with engineers. but they keep coming back to me with wanting me to take snap shots of it not working, and then askign me if I am in a car with tinted windows, or near a microwave etc. just dumb, it is in the software. we have four in our family two are affected and two are not, and I think everyone is on 16.6 or 16.6.1.

I have replaced the phone, even set it up without my apps and data, and still did nto work after 15 mintues.

I am not sure if it is associated to my Apple ID somehow, as that is the only thing I used when setting up the new phone. or if maybe there are different manufactures of the phones and some are affected and some are not.

super frustrating, as it seems everything leverages locations servies these days, and I am dead in the water.

I wish I could go back to what version was out before 16/.6

If you're facing issues with GPS on your iPhone for quite sometime, here are possible solutions that can help:

  • Restart your iPhone
  • Re-enable Location Services
  • Disable and enable Wi-Fi or Cellular Data
  • Check Date and Time Zone settings
  • Enable Compass Calibration: Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Compass Calibration.
  • Put your iPhone in Airplane Mode for a while
  • Update your iPhone

In Weather App, there is a cross out on the Location sign at the bottom left of the page.

In Yr app, the default Location base forecast is keep show running sign.

And in Google map, the current location show the previous one 1-2 hour before and stop at that location, navigating is not work.

All these app already set Location Service to “Always”.
