What verification code?
If you mean a 2 Factor Authentication code, then it will send the code to whatever number you have added as a trusted number for that purpose when you select the option.
If you changed numbers and never updated it, then it will continue to use the one it has.
You are responsible for maintaining the trusted numbers up to date for 2-Factor Authentication.
