Audio Prohibition Symbol

Hi, the audio on my Mac air is not working. If I try to turn it up or down I get a prohibition sign under the sound symbol, and no sound comes out. What does this mean?

do you have anything in sound output options that the volume is controlled by the device? and is that device selected? I know that in my menubar sound options, I have three things that, when selected, are greyed out and the volume is shown at 100%. those things are controlled by their respective devices. and when one of those are selected, I too get the "prohibitory" sound popup.

in my instance, those three things are:

  1. Aggregate Device
  2. Multi-Output Device and,
  3. my SAMSUNG television.

what do you have in your menubar sound options?
