You do not need yubikey to have all your files protected on Mac....

Are you using a password to log into your account?

Yubikey and other similar devices are useful for multifactor authentication to protect your Apple ID if you prefer not to have a code sent to a trusted device. But, I agree with leroydouglas in that they are not necessary to protect the files on your Mac.
