My system won't go past "checking for updates" HELP!

I currently have OS Big Sur 11.6 and I am trying to do a software update and it won't go past the "checking for updates..."

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.6

I understand Software Update is "Checking for updates..." with no end in sight.


Several workarounds have been proposed, such as restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode" and checking for updates while in that mode, and / or resetting NVRAM. Try both.
