iPad Youtube Airplay to AppleTV (A2169) - Playback turns to Black Screen

I have an old iPad Air 1 with Youtube app installed. I have an Apple TV 4k 2nd generation (A2169) connected directly to the internet modem via a gigabit ethernet cable.

1) Open Youtube app on iPad Air 1 (2013)

2) Find any video.

3) Press the cast button at the top of the app

4) Select "AirPlay and Bluetooth devices"

5) Select the "Apple TV - Living Room"

6) Video is played from Apple TV 4k 2nd Generation

The video plays on the TV. After a few minutes the iPad screen gets dark. After another few minutes the iPad screen is turned off. After a set amount of time (maybe 15 minutes?) the screen turns black with a blue bar at the bottom exactly like the screenshot found on reddit:

After the screen turns black, unlocking the iPad and going back to the Youtube app, video play/pause controls are unresponsive. The iPad still thinks it is airplaying the video.

I cast the same way using my Chromecast 4k but I don't have Youtube playback dropping half way.

I also have a very new iPad Pro and an iPhone 13 Pro Max I could try if the IOS version matters.

Greetings winston_dang,

It looks like you've completed a lot of great steps. Sometimes it's the small steps that add up to the most help, as they help with further isolating the issue.

Have you tried connecting to another Wi-Fi network to see if the issue remains? If that is not an available option, you may want to try deleting/forgetting the Wi-Fi network from your Apple device, and then see if re-adding it helps to correct the problem.

You may also want to consider updating all the devices that are linked to the Apple ID to ensure that the software compatibility is not causing the issue. If all is updated and you continue to have the issue, you may want to reach out to Apple Support directly for further assistance. You can reach out to them by clicking here: Get Support - Apple or over the phone by calling the number that is most local to your region: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support.

Kind regards!

Hey there and welcome to Apple Support Communities winston_dang,

We can certainly understand your concern and are here to help.

We recommend checking out these steps for more information on how to troubleshoot AirPlay with your device and see if that helps.

" If screen mirroring or streaming isn't working on your AirPlay-compatible device

Learn what to do if you can't stream content with AirPlay, mirror the screen on your iOS device or Mac to your Apple TV or smart TV, or have another issue using AirPlay.

Try these steps first

After each step, see if you still need help.

  1. Make sure that your AirPlay-compatible devices are turned on and near each other.
  2. Check that the devices are updated to the latest software and are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Restart the devices that you want to use with AirPlay or screen mirroring.

If you're prompted to enter a password, you might have restrictions turned on, or you might need to adjust your AirPlay password settings.

Still need help?

If you have another issue using AirPlay, learn what to do.

If your music unexpectedly stops

If your music stops playing unexpectedly, use your device or Siri to start playing music again. In some situations, the Home app might be using your HomePod,* Apple TV, or AirPlay-compatible speaker as the main audio source for streaming music (even if your HomePod* or Apple TV isn’t currently playing music). Using Siri on that device or performing another task might cause playback to stop everywhere. You can also use an iOS device or computer with iTunes as an audio source to manually stream music instead.

If you see video but don't hear audio

If you don't hear audio when streaming video from your iOS device or Mac to your Apple TV, make sure that the volume is turned up and not muted on both your iOS device and your television or receiver.

If you're streaming video from an iPhone or iPad, check the Ring/Silent switch. If it's set to silent, you'll see an orange line. Toggle the switch to turn on the ringer.

If you still can’t use AirPlay after trying these steps, contact Apple Support. "

These steps will help ensure your device is working with ease and can fix common issues like the ones you’re experiencing.

Kindest regards!

Very generic steps. Restarting won't fix it. It doesn't explain why the casted Youtube video from iPad Air 1 via airplay appears on the AppleTV and gets disrupted more than 10 minutes later to a black TV screen with blue bar. I didn't know there was a ringer switch on an iPad, but I will look.

I have since tested out my iPad Pro (very recent version with OLED screen). It behaves differently than my old iPad Air 1.

1) Open Youtube App with iPad Pro

2) Select Youtube video and play it within Youtube app

3) Press the cast icon

4) Select "Airplay and bluetooth" devices

5) Screen gets blurred with popup. Select AppleTV - Living Room

6) Video plays on AppleTV which is great.

7) Turn off iPad Pro screen to conserve OLED burn in. The video continues to play on AppleTV.

8) A few minutes later, the AppleTV video pauses with a still video frame. What the heck happened?

9) Returning to the iPad pro the youtube app is still showing that airplay is still active with a loading circle.

I repeated the above test twice with two different videos. The video froze the same way consistently.

The Airplay video with Youtube app to AppleTV is glitchy as the airplayed video will always stop on its own. I bought the expensive AppleTV box only for the airplay feature and it is very disappointing that it is so buggy with Youtube. I will continue to try other apps.

I also have Chomecast 4k connected by ethernet. Chromecast seems to play the video independently after it is casted from the iPad Youtube even if connection is lost between the two. Sometimes you need to reconnect if you want to continue to control the video. With Chromecast, the casted video will at least play to the end.

On the other hand, the AppleTV has its own processor but for some reason needs help from the iPad. This looks like a very bad Airplay design where it does not function asynchronously.
