Why is my sim status locked

Question

I’ve had this phone for years and I try to get a new provider but the sim status says locked. So, what do I do from this point?

Contact the cellular carrier it’s locked to and get it unlocked.

Contact your "old" provider and ask them to remove the lock on your phone.

When that has occurred, then you can contact your new provider to get new service set up.

Apple is not involved at all in this process.
