How to Turn off Backup Documents on iCloud drive ?

I am very confused by iCloud drive. A few years ago I believed that it provided a backup of my computer but then found that i needed a hard drive to do that. Now My iCloud storage is saturated at 50GB. The largest item is labelled "Docs". Since iCloud drive does not backup my computer why is it backing up so-called Docs? I don't see any easy way to un-tick the box and to prevent iCloud drive from doing this as there is no icon called "Docs.". Any ideas? I have deleted many iMessages in an effort to free storage as well. My thinking i that I don't need iCloud drive for document backup but there doesn't seem to be any option except to delete files one by one which is tedious. I believe that iCloud storage is useful for the back up of IPhones and iPads, not computers. Correct?

iCloud does not provide backups of your Mac but you can backup your iPhone or iPad.

In addition, iCloud can synchronize your files, photos, and other select data so that it is keep consistent across your Apple devices.

Docs could be more than what you think of as documents but will likely include anything in your iCloud Drive folder on a Mac, Files app on an iDevice, and possibly your Mac's desktop and documents folders too.

Visit system settings > Apple ID > iCloud to see what services use your iCloud space.

Correct. Those items will be removed from your computer and retained in iCloud. You can drag the contents off desktop and documents folder to a location that does not sync, say in the home folder. That will remove the items from iCloud. After you switch off desktop and documents you can then drag the contents back into their respective folders on your Mac. Or, you can let the system delete the files. That might not be the best option in this case as you have no space available in iCloud and campy guarantee that all of your desktop and documents files are synced.

Thank for the info,

muguy. I found the "Doc" tab inside the Preference iCloud options

button. When I try to un-check the box that says Docs I get the following

warning: "If you continue, the items will be deleted from the desktop and

Documents folder on this Mac. They will remain available on iCloud Drive.

New items added to the

desktop or Documents folder on this Mac will no longer be stored on iCloud

Drive."

Since I am trying to

create space on iCloud I don't want docs to remain on iCloud. What I do wish is

for the docs to stay on my computer (and only on my computer) without having to

verify folder by folder doc by doc that they are indeed on my computer and if

needs be drag and drop them on my hard drive before erasing them from iCloud. This

does now seem a hopeless thing to wish for, however. As "docs" takes up a big part of the

storage space I have to get rid of them. In addition it serves no purpose to

store my docs on iCloud drive because I am not trying to share "docs"

on several devices. As I said I am confused by the distinction being made

between backing up my phone iPad but not backing up my computer. In the

meantime the other sharing apps that I do use across devices have stopped

working (i.e. "Notes") and instead I see messages saying that I have

no storage space left.  This is all very inconvenient

as I backed up my computer on a separate hard drive recently purchased for that

purpose and thought that I had solved the problem.
