Exactly, it's the same issue with my M1 MacBook, bought in May,2022.

When I called Apple CC they asked to perform few steps while being on the call. For sometime the issue of restarting automatically went away once I close the lid.

But again the same problem as reappeared. I shutdown the system and then if I close the lid it restarts the system in sometime.

But if I shutdown the system and do not close the lid it's all fine. But its not a practical solution.

Hoping that Apple will do something about it.

Hi All,

So I got to know the issue and the resolution to it.

My laptop is still covered under in AppleCare, So I went to Apple Authorized Service Center(ASC) to give my laptop for repair.

Before taking in the laptop they ran the run diagnostic and everything came fine.

I tried to shutdown multiple times just to show then whats happening. But suddenly it started behaving normally.

But around my 6th attempt it restarted after shutting down and closing the lid.

Thats when ASC believed me completely(They were little suspicious earlier as they have never seen this issue before)

I would suggest to take a video of the entire issue at your home, so that incase the product start behaving normally you can still show them whats happening.

So within 2 weeks (including the time awaited for the replaced part)they fixed the macbook n they called me to collect it.

Before collecting it I asked him what was the issue, how did they resolve it and how much it would have costed me if I did not have Apple Care coverage.

1) What was the issue ?

When we close the lid, there are 2 sensors on either side of keyboard just below the speaker vent which takes signals for the corresponding magnets which are near the bezel on the either side of display.

When you close the lid and magnet come near the sensors, these sensors understand that you have either put the system to sleep or shut it down completely.

If the connection between the magnets + sensor breaks thats when the laptop assumes that somebody has lifted the screen and hence time to wake up the system.

Unfortunately, due to malfunctioning of these 2 sensors, when you shutdown the system and close the lid it simply understand that somebody has tried to restart the system and hence behave unexpectedly.

2) How did they resolve it ?

Now, since the laptop is designed in such a way that these sensors are soldered with the lower body of the clampshell + the keyboard. Hence the entire lower part of clampshell along the keyboard too needs to be replaced by ASC.

3) How much it costs ?

If you have Apple Care, then if would costs you nothing. Atleast it did not cost me a thing in Poland. I Apple's Policy is same every where else.

But if you do NOT have Apple Care, then it you cost you roughly 1500 PLN or 30000 INR, as of Aug 2023.

Note :

I bought my M1 macbook from India on May 2022 and got it repaired in Poland in Aug, 2023. I bought Apple Care coverage for 3 yrs at time of buying the laptop.

Hope this helps.

Aman

After Reintalling OS and Erasing all drive after due steps with on Call apple Executive the problem is changed now macbook air m1 is not starting randomly on closed lid but when opening the lid the macbook is not starting automatically as it used to start before. I need to click the button or trackpad to boot it. God knows what is the issue. Apple CC is also confused as the laptop is fully diagnosed. And one more thing when my laptop is shutdown and lid is closed and if i connect charger the laptop boot automatically in closed lid as i can hear startup sound.

Late model MacBooks have "Start on lid lift" capability. On Apple silicone Macs it cannot be defeated.

What looks like a restart on closing, may just be the auto start on lifting. The two circumstances appear the same, but the real action is automatically starting on lid lift.

That can be defeated on Intel MacBooks, but if you ever do a key combination reset, it's comes right back.
