Backing up my iPad

My I pad will not back up

I have not done it in a long time and now it won’t work

It's unclear if you are trying to backup to iCloud or backup to a Mac or PC.


Try the steps in the article below relevant to what you are trying to do:


If you can't back up to iCloud - Apple Support


If you can't back up your iOS or iPadOS device to a computer or restore it from a backup - Apple Support

Are you unable to backup to iCloud at all - or are you experiencing difficulty with automatic backup to iCloud?


When initially enabling iCloud backup, the automatic backup process won’t run until you have manually triggered an initial backup from iPad settings:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > 

  • Backup This iPad - set to ON
  • Backup Now


After the initial backup, the next automatic backup should run when these conditions are met:

  • 24hrs or more have elapsed since the last backup
  • the iPad is connected to its Power Adapter
  • the iPad is connected to WiFi
  • the iPad is locked
