when I try to print from a mackintosh 1400 to my color stylewriter 1500 it says the port is in use by another application, everything is on and recognised ? I take it it is the modem which is using the port.

You could also try to reset the PRAM. Then deactivate AppleTalk (if it is not already inactive).
Is your PowerBook 1400cs equipped with a network card in the Expansion port area (page 2 in http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/powerbooks/0340070APB1400UMRV.PDF)? Otherwise, an appropriate Ethernet or Wi-Fi (16-bit) PC Card could be used.

A 1400cs would normally use a PC Card modem, or an external modem connected to the combined Printer/Modem port (although that port would be occupied by the printer cable in this very case). What kind of modem are you using?
Did you try to inactivate AppleTalk in the Chooser, as I suggested in my reply under your other topic?
