I was trying to get Instagram Threads on my iPhone 6s but my Apple ID sign-in failed although it still works on this MacBook Air. I don't want to have to change my password as that is "an accident waiting to happen". Is there any illumination for this dark place.

You could try checking that you are signed in (to your iPhone) with the correct Apple ID:
