Tried to restart iPhone, reinstall app, update map, delete and upload new map… nothing seemed to work. Checked online for solutions but nothing concrete anywhere for proper fix. For Android, there seem to be a fix with cache clearing but no function for iPhone except to reinstall but this didn’t work anyway. Downloading the map works OK but once offline, the map lacks detail or mostly blank. Intended purpose to work offline is useless.

If you didn’t understand my post let me state it more clearly: It is the way Google Maps works, regardless of what model iPhone you have. If you don’t like the way Google Maps works you will have to discuss it with Google.
I also see the same problem - insane that this is an issue not resolved - I go off roading a lot and gmaps are way better than apple maps and all my lists are on the gmaps - just recently switched to iphone and this bug will annoy me for tons! Will try to write apple customer service on this.
Google Maps is not an Apple product. You will have to work with Google to solve this, but most likely it is working as Google intended it to work.
Looking for solutions from the community if anyone had similar problem on their iPhone and resolved it.
My best guess is that 1 billion iPhones have this problem if they are using Google Maps.
