Trying to upgrade an early 2013 MacBook pro

I’ve just been given an old MacBook Pro running 10.8.5 but am unable to upgrade the software. The system won’t let me access the App Store, presumably because of the age of the machine and old system level. I then run into the problem that despite successfully connecting to the Wifi and being able to access other sites like google, I can’t access Apple support. It just states can’t establish a secure connection. I’ve tried reinstalling the existing OS, checked the date, DNS etc but nothing is fixing the issue. Anyone have any suggestions on what if anything I can do to upgrade? Thanks

Getting there. So far I’ve managed to upgrade to Sierra 10.12. I had to install chrome on 10.8.5 as nothing would make safari work, and download and install 10.10, 10.11 and 10.12 in order using these links How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

safari and store started working with El Capitan 10.11
