Document files taking up too much space macbook

Macbook pro - document files are taking up more space than anything else, 125 gb. When I search documents I come up with a ton of files such as string files, .plst and .xml files. Do I need those? Can I delete them?

Only you can decide what data a user creates is worth keeping. You can safely delete ONLY USER DATA files after you copy them to an external HDD and verify the copies are good. If you don't care about preserving the data, skip the copying.

Be very careful about deleting any non user created files or downloads, i.e. system files. If you're that unsure of what you need to keep, delete only files found in the standard user default folders: Documents, Music, Downloads and etc. and leave everything else untouched.

If you internal drive is a small one, 120GB, 256GB or maybe even 512 GB you will likely benefit from an external data storage HDD.
