Before I start this process, can I pick and choose files and folders in System and network?

I'm going to be migrating from a 1TB Fusion 2014 to a MM Pro 512GB. I need to pick and choose files and folders. In the instructions there is an image for "System and Network" and a caret, but no other information. Before I end up in the rabbit hole and accidentally am attempting to move 700+gb from the 1TB, will I be able to pick and choose in the system and network files? Or not even bring over these files? As you know, the old 2014 is Monterey and cannot be updated to Ventura, no matter how many times the instructions say upgrade before migrating, and the New computer is Ventura.

No.

What you need to do is purchase one or more external hard drives. Use one as an archive and use one for Time Machine. They should both be at least 2 TB. Make a Time Machine backup of the old computer. Then manually archive any large files that you want to keep for posterity. Time Machine is a great backup system, but it is only a backup system. If you delete files, they will eventually be deleted from Time Machine too.

Once you've archived your old files and make a backup, then you can prune the files you don't want to transfer to the new computer. Once you get it down to 300 GB (and not one byte more), you can do the transfer.

Another option would be an iCloud subscription. Make sure all of those files are in an iCloud location and upload them all. Then just turn on iCloud on the new computer. You're done. The Time Machine backup and archive would still be a good idea, however.

Move drive hogging data like movie libraries and music libraries to a separate external drive and keep them there and do not migrate them to the new machine. Music and TV libraries can easily be linked to an external drive.

Personally, I keep all my user data on an external drive and only keep apps and those items that some apps really need on the internal drive. Of course, I have a second drive to back up that one.

Don't think I can do anything with a TM backup, if it backs up 600GB and I only have a 512GB machine; And this is a TM with Monterey on an intel machine and I'm going to Ventura Apple Silicone.

The "Systems Data" in "About this Mac" shows 38GB now ... it was 569GB until I removed the hidden .cleverfiles (a restoration process by Disk Drill, that has been hogging space for probably 2 years and I didn't know it until recently). I read where people think 38gb is large. HA! :-) Thanks for the tips but I don't believe they will help.

Another way to ask the question is whether the system and network gets changed from Monterey to Ventura anyway.
