wondering if there’s a way to get money refunded if a child made a purchase on my phone

Not normally. Apple has provisions for children by using Family Sharing and setting limits on purchases. Purchases require Face ID, Fingerprint ID or Passcode. If they had the password, that’s on you for giving your child the password.
