MBP 14" keyboard backlight issue & quick battery drain

Hello Community,

During some simple web browsing suddenly screen went black and I could not turn my 14" M1 Pro MBP back on for around 15 minutes. Then, it booted up automatically and did not indicate the cause of blackout or if there was any error.

Later, I figured out the keyboard backlight does not work at all, I can move the slider but nothing happens.

Furthermore, if I don't turn the machine off completely, it remains lukewarm and drains a whole battery from 100% to 0% overnight.

I'd like to ask for your thoughts, if there is anything worth trying before I send my notebook in for repair.

Thank you.

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 13.5

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your MacBook Pro 14". Before sending your notebook in for repair, you can try some troubleshooting steps to see if you can resolve the problems:

**1. Reset the NVRAM/PRAM**:

- Shut down your MacBook Pro.

- Turn it back on and immediately press and hold the Option + Command + P + R keys simultaneously.

- Keep holding the keys for about 20 seconds and then release.

- Allow your MacBook Pro to boot normally and check if the issues are resolved.

**2. Reset the SMC**:

- Shut down your MacBook Pro.

- Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release it.

- Wait a few seconds and turn on your MacBook Pro.

- Check if the keyboard backlight and battery drain issues are resolved.

**3. Check for Software Updates**:

- Ensure your macOS is up to date by going to "Apple menu" > "System Preferences" > "Software Update." Install any available updates.

**4. Check for App Conflicts**:

- Sometimes, third-party apps or utilities can cause issues. Try booting your MacBook Pro in Safe Mode by restarting and holding the Shift key until you see the Apple logo. In Safe Mode, only essential system software will load. If the problems don't occur in Safe Mode, it could indicate a third-party app conflict.

**5. Diagnose Hardware with Apple Diagnostics**:

- Shut down your MacBook Pro.

- Turn it on and immediately press and hold the "D" key until the Apple Diagnostics screen appears. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the diagnostics and check for any hardware issues.

**6. Check Battery Usage**:

- Go to "Apple menu" > "System Preferences" > "Battery" and check the "Battery Usage" section. Look for any processes or apps consuming excessive power.

If the issues persist after trying these steps, it's advisable to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have your MacBook Pro examined and repaired. The symptoms you described, such as sudden blackouts, unresponsive keyboard backlight, and excessive battery drain, may indicate potential hardware problems that require professional attention.

Before sending your MacBook Pro for repair, make sure to back up your important data to prevent any potential data loss during the repair process. If your MacBook Pro is under warranty, the repair may be covered by Apple.
