Since our discussion will be here for a long time, and other Readers may find it by searching for a similar problem, you MIGHT have been looking for a far more obscure symbol.
You can use 'Keyboard Viewer' to get a picture of your keyboard and try shift and control to see if you can spot the character you seek:

I feel really stupid about this now but I knew that I had used the symbol before on several occasions. Even scanning the keyboard slowly, (twice!) I failed to notice the <> keys between the M key the Q-mark key.
Only on my third tour of the keyboard did I finally spot it. Talk about hiding in plain sight!
