payment method I used stopped working

had a visa card for recurring payments in use for over years. this month (august 2023), the payments were rejected. got a message that 'this card cannot be used for itunes'. tried replacing and gave up and used an amex. was able to do a different visa card but cannot return to use the card I have been using which is not having any trouble anywhere else - online or in person. what gives, I can't use the card of my choice which is active and in good standing.
