iPad overheating when using notes and Apple Pencil

Hi,

I have the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inches. I have been using it for education, and recreationally for the past three years. I have recently noticed that it overheats when I am using it to take handwritten notes on the Notes app with my Apple Pencil. It becomes physically hot to touch and I have to take a break so I don’t burn myself. The battery also drains faster. Just now, I went from 67->33% in one hour while using the Notes app and Apple Pencil combination. Usually, the fully charged iPad lasts me two days if I do not take notes. This problem does not happen when I am using the Apple Pencil with other apps (for even longer durations). I have used OneNote, Procreate, Paper by WeTransfer, MediBang Paint, etc.

Brand new Apple Pencil Pro with Brand New iPad Pro 11" (M4/7th Gen):

In Notes, Pencil starts going wonky (time-delay response to scrolling/writing) and that's when iPad overheats & battery drains rapidly. Rebooting iPad (from Settings/General) temporarily fixes Pencil wonkiness. But overheating & draining battery on brand new iPad can't be a good thing for longevity. Needs permanent fix.

If these things are brand new, meaning you purchased them within the last 14 days, return them. Then buy ones that work. If you're beyond the 14 days, arrange for Apple to service them. This is not normal. Apple can't fix it unless they see the devices.

I spent three days last week at a conference taking notes all day on my brand new iPad Pro 11 inch. I've had a lot of iPads over the years and all the versions of Pencil. This was by far the best experience ever. And no, nothing overheated.

Hello,

I have the exact same issue and it hasn't even been a few months since I purchased it. I'm also using Apple notes app to take handwritten notes with Apple Pencil, a long with split screen to see my slides on files app for reference. Battery gets drained extremely quickly even with low brightness.

Kindly please fix this issue.

My iPad heats up with any use of my pencil to draw, regardless of the application. Microsoft Whiteboards, the on-board Notes app, AND -- yes -- Notability. I think it's a code issue, but at the OS level.

If that were truly the case, it would happen to everyone. It doesn't. Contact Apple and arrange for them to run diagnostics.
