iPad overheating when using notes and Apple Pencil

Hi,

I have the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inches. I have been using it for education, and recreationally for the past three years. I have recently noticed that it overheats when I am using it to take handwritten notes on the Notes app with my Apple Pencil. It becomes physically hot to touch and I have to take a break so I don’t burn myself. The battery also drains faster. Just now, I went from 67->33% in one hour while using the Notes app and Apple Pencil combination. Usually, the fully charged iPad lasts me two days if I do not take notes. This problem does not happen when I am using the Apple Pencil with other apps (for even longer durations). I have used OneNote, Procreate, Paper by WeTransfer, MediBang Paint, etc.

We aren't experiencing defective iPads, this is a common problem, across many different makes of iPad.

If I had to guess, I would say that the handwriting feature of the Notes app is not very well optimised, and once you've been writing on it for an extended period, perhaps an hour or so, something happens.

The iPad becomes way too hot, which downclocks the CPU, and the registration of the keystrokes gets slow and janky.

Using the same iPad, using the same Pen, but switching to Notability, no more overheating, no janky performance, not battery being drained.

This is a serious issue with the Notes app, as it looks like it just can't be used for serious notetaking.

The same thing is happening to me as well. I just used notes on a BRAND NEW, just out of the box yesterday, iPad Air 5th Gen (I think) that I got to replace my iPad mini, that I loved and was perfect in every way except for how the battery would drain ridiculously fast and get hot while writing notes every day. We thought it was an issue with the mini but it clearly isn’t since I’m experiencing it using Notes for the first time in a brand new iPad.

Apple please fix. We shouldn’t have to use a 3rd party app to do what is native to the iPad.

This is the exact problem happening with me on Ipad Pro (M4) 2024 13 inches model. Although I do have Ipad 9th generation (bought in 2019), and everything works very stable with pencil 1st generation and notes application without any heating issues and battery drain out (Never changed the battery too). Now I am surprised to understand the older ones are working very stable but new upgraded models are running with these premature issues. This is frustrating to me as I had a positive hopes while upgrading to Ipad Pro but completely disappointed now.

Hello,

I have the exact same issue and it hasn't even been a few months since I purchased it. I'm also using Apple notes app to take handwritten notes with Apple Pencil, a long with split screen to see my slides on files app for reference. Battery gets drained extremely quickly even with low brightness.

Kindly please fix this issue.
