iPad Pro overheating from Notes app and Apple Pencil

My IPad keeps overheating from normal use. I’m using the Notes app and writing with the Apple Pencil. No case is one. This is a brand new iPad Pro M5 13inch. And it gets HOT in the middle, so hot it disrupts my focus and writing. What is going on?

  • Some warmth is normal, but “gets HOT in the middle” during simple Notes + Pencil on a brand-new iPad Pro isn’t typical.
  • First check the basics: update iPadOS, restart, and try in Safe conditions (cool room, 20–80% brightness, Wi-Fi on, no charging while writing).
  • Test if it’s app-specific: write 10–15 min in Apple Notes, then Freeform/Notability/Goodnotes. If only Notes heats it up, it may be a software bug.
  • Also check if something else is running: close heavy apps, disable Background App Refresh, and see if iCloud sync (large Notes/PDFs) is happening.
  • If it’s still getting uncomfortably hot doing Notes + Pencil, contact Apple Support / visit a service center.

It is not unusual for an iPad to become warm when being used - more so when using some types of iPad case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat.

The key point is that whilst your iPad may become very warm in normal use, the iPad should not become uncomfortably hot to handle. If your iPad is becoming too hot to hold, you should take your iPad along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store - where the technicians can hands-on examine and test your iPad for faults:

Should you need to do so, you can seek assistance directly from Apple Support using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

Alternatively you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
