Impossible to sign in to Apple Mail on iPad

using iPad Air 3 with padOS 16.5.1 (c) After changing my iCloud password, I'm having trouble with my Apple Mail app on my iPad. When I opened it today, I was greeted with a series of screens designed for when you haven't created an email account: 1. open Mail, get "Welcome to Mail" screen with account choices (iCloid, MS Exchange, Google, etc) 2. Select "iCloud", window pops up (see first image) to enter iCloud email address 3. I enter my iCloud email address, tap "Next" 4. Box for password appears, I enter my password, tap "Next" 5. "Verifying" message pops up (see second image) 6. stops verifying, and we go back to step 3 above and I'm in an endless loop. Of interest: Apple Mail works fine on my iMac. Any helpful ideas for getting out of this loop and regaining use of Apple Mail would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you, Tod

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

If your iPad is not behaving as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

@LotusPilot:

Sorry for the late followup - on the road for a few days.

Your most recent suggestion above really helped. I've now got Apple Mail working fine on both my Mac and iPad. Unfortunately the backup and restore process on the iPad meant that a couple of apps got deleted because they are no longer on the App Store, but I'll make do.

Thank you for taking the time to provide me with assistance.

Cheers,

Tod
