iOS Photos memories have wrong location

The background: I live in Singapore. I recently took a trip to Johor Bahru, a city in Malaysia near Singapore.

The problem: All my auto-generated memories in Photos have changed their previously-correct titles from “Singapore” to “Johore” or “Johor Bahru”, and newer ones appear with the wrong title too. This makes no sense to me - I’ve checked the locations of my photos, and only the ~200 which were taken during the trip are tagged in Johor Bahru, while my remaining thousands of photos are tagged in Singapore.

What I’ve tried: I renamed the memories manually, but I’d really like for this to not happen again. I don’t understand how taking a trip, would cause everyday photos taken in my home country to be mislabeled.

Thanks! :)

I have found the source of the problem: There is definitely something wrong with the way the photos app handles locations.

This may be specific to Singapore/Malaysia/Johor, or it may be a bug.

Here you can see a photo of taxis that is correctly tagged with the location “Bukit Batok South”, a place in Singapore. Going to the photo’s info and tapping its location, we can see that the location is indeed within Singapore on Apple Maps.

Yet, within the “Places” view in Photos, we can see it is tagged with “Johor” instead of “Home”?! To make things worse, I can’t even change the name of the place. Talk about infuriating 😐

This doesn't make any sense to me either.

On an iPhone, it's not possible to universally change the location of photos within the Photos app.

The Photos app organizes and displays photos based on the date they were taken, but it doesn't offer a built-in feature to change the location or order of photos across the entire app. You can organize and manage your photos within albums, but altering the global order of photos is not a native feature on the iPhone.

There is something amiss here in your post.

Hi, I’m not sure I understand your reply. What does my question have to do with changing the location or the global order of photos? I haven’t changed anything manually.

It’s the automatically-generated memories that are showing up with the wrong title. It should be “Singapore”, not “Johor”. This has happened to ALL automatically-generated memories since my JB trip, but I haven’t altered my photos or settings in any way.
