MacBook Air Backup with external storage

I need to backup my 246GB MacBook Air and only 97 GB is used. I need to backup only once because I’m getting a new one but I won’t have the old and new at the same time to transfer using migration assistant. I got a 128GB external storage. Is this gonna be enough?

128 GB will hold 97 GB. But with that tiny a disk, you're going to run into space problems a lot sooner than a larger drive will. Even a 256GB is rather "smallish" now days. My backup drives are 512 GB and 1TB depending on the Mac's usage. Backup drives are generally suggested to be 2x-3x the size of the internal drive.

An external HDD for data storage is a good idea. But remember, if that external data is important to you, back it up too.

You can certainly backup a 246 GB drive, but all of it will never fit on a drive smaller than it is.
