5th gen ipad hot home button

i have been using my iPad (5th Gen) for the last 2 years and it has the latest OS (v16.2). A couple of days ago when I unlocked the iPad it displayed a message "Unable to activate touch id for this iPad". Since then the home button is getting unusually hot, sometimes scary hot, when the iPad is in a locked state (even when it is not charging). The temperature goes back to normal when I start using it. Touch id is not working and I am not able to register any new fingerprint as well (shows a message it is unable register any new print). This did not happen before the recent OS upgrade. I have never used touch id. The article to which techs often point has no useful info. There is no Apple Store near me. Does anyone have any idea what maybe going wrong here? Thanks

Your TouchID sensor should not become uncomfortably hot to touch. As your iPad has iPadOS 16.2 installed, try updating to the current version - at time of writing, this being iPadOS 16.6.

If you continue to experience difficulties after performing the update, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:
