How do I get the Apple Photos Duplicate process to work on my Macintosh? OS is up to date. There were quite a few old duplicates but I cleared them out. I scanned many photos so I know there are many more duplicates but the duplicate folder is gone for several days now.

Photos will scan for more duplicates, when your Mac has nothing else to do.
My Mac is showing me new items in the Duplicates album every few weeks. importing new photos does not necessarily trigger the duplicates detection, as Photos is scanning for exact duplicates when you import the photos and will point out the duplicates in the Import dialog.
So importing new photos should not create duplicates in your library.
