Downloaded and installed iOS 16.6 to my iPhone 13 but now software update doesn't work. What I mean is that when I run the software update I usually get "you already have the latest version" or similar but now I get "unable to check for update - an error occurred while checking for a software update." Same issue on my connected Apple Watch 8. Did iOS 16.6 just permanently stop my phone and watch doing software updates?

No. There is apparently an issue with the update server. Same errors on iOS 15, and iPadOS.
It's a general issue.
There is currently no newer update beyond 16.6 at this time though.

As there have been no newer updates, that is exactly what you should be seeing.
After the update I can’t update crucial apps I use on a daily basis such as Outlook or GPS tracking apps for my kids phones and such!
Apple should be better than this!
This would have never happened if Steve was still alive and kicking! He would never allow a product to be released if there was this much fault!

Respectfully disagree. If there are no newer updates phone used to tell me so with "No updates are available at this time" message or similar. Now it doesn't even seem to connect to check.
