Removing searchmarquis.com

Every time I open a new tab on my Google Chrome browser, it opens that site or Microsoft Bing. I don't have those set up as default, only Google. I took the screenshots another post suggested and it said to post them here, that someone could help. Thank you!

The file that is giving you problems is "com.readerupdate.plist" in your first screen shot. Restart in Safe Mode and remove the file. It is always a good idea to have a backup when deleting system files. After deleting, restart to verify that it has not replicated itself.

I also assume you use the GoToMeeting app given the files that are installed there.

If it is only affecting Google Chrome and not Safari, then you also need to revert Chrome to its defaults: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?hl=en

The file named com.readerupdate.plist needs to be removed, and it needs to be removed while in "Safe Mode". Write back if you need comprehensive instructions.

So searchmarquis seems to be gone (when I open a new tab it doesn't try to open that site – and it worked by resetting Chrome to default settings, not by the safe mode option). But I still have Microsoft Bing (and sometimes Ask.com) popping up when searching on the Chrome search bar instead of Google. And yes, google is set as the default search engine and no other engines are set.

With the understanding that I do not use Google products and my ability to assist with them is limited at best, you should probably review the comprehensive instructions posted for others. A representative sample can be found in these few:

In the end you might even consider completely uninstalling Google from your Mac according to Google's uninstallation instructions. That might resolve the problem. You can always install Google all over again if you really want it.

And get rid of Norton. Totally and irrevocably. Follow its uninstallation instructions. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.
