Camcorder to imovie not recording sound

I have a camcorder connected to my mac and am using imovie to digitize the videos. The videos are importing fine but there is no audio recording. When the movie is playing there is audio playing on the camcorder but when I play them in imovie there is no sound. HELP!

Is your camera Mini DV or analog? If it is Mini DV the clips are already digitized and you then would simply be importing them into iMovie.

Are these files in AVCHD format? In whatever format, do they play when put on the desktop and opened in QuickTimePlayer?

To cover the bases, make sure that your sound is not muted in the iMovie settings.

Hi lydia22222,

You'll want to make sure the connection are set up correctly so audio can be imported. Take a look at step 1:

1. Connect the tape-based camera to your Mac using the cable that came with the camera.
You may need to adjust the settings on your camera so that it can be controlled by iMovie. If your Mac doesn’t have a FireWire port but does have a Thunderbolt port, you can connect the FireWire cable using an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter or an Apple Thunderbolt Display (which also has a FireWire port).

Note: For best results when importing from a tape-based camera, it’s recommended that you import the video using the same camera you used to record it.
