how does Preview sort open images

When opening a group of photos in Preview, how does it sort the order? I have chronologically named files by date. I’d like to open them in Preview and maintain the sort order, but Preview seems to interpret the file names, i.e. numeric date is first (20010105-photo.jpg for example) and does not maintain the chronological order.

Preview shows photo slideshows in random order I just moved up to Ventura with an M2 Mac mini. I was used to being able to drag a folder of numbered photos onto Preview and have them show up in a slideshow in the proper order (01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg...). In Ventura, they show up in a random order. The fix is to first, open your folder and second, select all of the photos, then 3rd drag them all onto Preview. It will then arrange them in the proper order. If Mac is trying something new here hoping it will make our lives easier, it actually makes it harder. I suggest going back to the previous way of ordering batch photos within a folder. Thanks.

Sorting Recent Photos Folder It looks like this has been asked many times, with the same unsatisfactory answer. Please allow us to optionally sort the recent photos album by the date the photo was taken, instead of the date the photo was uploaded. Most of the people suggesting this do not want to scroll through photos using the All Photos option due to personal preferences on user interface. How hard is it to add a sorting option by data that already exists? You can already do it for all other albums.

Make sure the order selected is the order you want, and drag into the thumbnails drawer after opening the thumbnails drawer.
