Specifically, the Shift key is not capitalizing the letters. Is this broken, or fixable?

Take it in to an Apple Store or Authorized service provider, they can check it out and tell you if its actually broken, an Dif it is, if its actually fixable.
It is covered by a 1 year warranty same as the iPad. If the damage is a manufacturing defect it should be replaced for free.
