Imac Apple TV app not playing my home videos.

I have a late model iMac (intel version) with Ventura 13.4.1 and for a long time I have not been able to add copies of videos onto my Apple TV app. I've tried dragging them or adding files using the file menu on the Apple TV app. Nothing works. There are some files (174) that came over when you did the massive iTunes conversion but a lot more that did not and there seems to be no way to change that. I can play the videos by opening them with the Apple TV app (overriding malware message) but it still does not add them to the library.

The current Mac TV app does not allow me to import existing video files from my hard drive into the Apple TV library. […] It will not take any of the hundreds of mp4 or m4v files I have made from DVDs over the years.

The current TV app does have all that functionality for me, in largely the same way as iTunes did. I mostly use drag-and-drop to the main window with the Library tab selected. I think something else is preventing you to add or see them.

There is a slight difference in supported formats (codecs), which might be an issue for older media files. (But even unplayable files can be added to the Library successfully.) If your video files have H.264 video and AAC audio, in an .mp4/.m4v/.mov container, then it can work just fine.

Also note that video files tagged as “Movie” appear in the Movies section of the Library, and video files that are untagged or tagged as “Home Video” appear in the Home Videos section of the Library. Check both, if you think videos are missing.

Ok, here's some more subtlety to the situation. I find that if I try to add an m4v file then nothing happens. If I then change the filename extension to mp4, then the file is added to the TV app library. This seems pretty consistent. However if ask the TV app to show me duplicate items, everyone of those added in this way has a duplicate entry. One shows a little tiny video screen next the entry and one does not. But both point to the same file on the hard drive (with the mp4 appendage). And they only show as duplicates by making that selection in the file menu. So I then tried making the mp4 change and dragging the file in without having failed with the m4v. Then nothing happens. However, if I change it back to the original m4v and then drag it in, it then is successfully added to the library. There is something strange afoot here in Apple's programing of the TV app. Switching to mov appendage also works but again requires dragging twice (with different appendage) before it enters the library. They all appear to go into 'Home Videos' as you would expect.

Hi willisjw,

Since you have not been able to add copies of videos onto your Apple TV app, we recommend that you try the steps here: Manage your library in the Apple TV app on Mac - Apple Support

To perform the recommended troubleshooting steps via the link above, complete the steps in the section titled "Import home videos to your library."

You can import your own video files so that you can watch them in the Apple TV app.
1. In the Apple TV app  on your Mac, choose File > Import.
2. Locate a video file on your Mac, then click Open.
3. Imported videos appear in the Home Videos category in the sidebar of your library.

We recommend the steps above because they will show you how to import home videos to your library.

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Ok, thanks for replying but you have totally missed my point. I have followed all the instructions. I'm a Mac user since 1984. The current Mac TV app does not allow me to import existing video files from my hard drive into the Apple TV library. It doesn't matter whether I drag them in or use File Import. Nothing happens. It will take home videos as from Photos but it will not take any of the hundreds of mp4 or m4v files I have made from DVDs over the years. iTunes had no problem importing these files but when they split the TV app off from iTunes it lost functionality. As near as I can tell many people have had this problem (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ripped-dvd-library-no-longer-showing-up-on-apple-tv-app.2301753/) and have turned to Infuse or similar apps to make up for what Apple should be providing to simply use existing video files.
