email read on iPhone not marked as read

All of the sudden, the emails I read on my iPhone 11 don’t show as ‘read’. I have to manually mark them as ‘read’ which is a major problem, not to mention time consuming. How to fix?

iPhone 11, iOS 16

Hey,

This seems to be a common issue for some iPhone users who use the native Mail app to access their Outlook or Exchange accounts. This could be caused by a sync problem between your phone and your email server.

  • One possible solution is to change the mail days to sync setting on your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your account] > Fetch New Data, turn on "Push" and choose a different option (under the fetch category). This might force your phone to resync with the server and mark the emails as read.

  • Another possible solution is to delete and re-add your email account on your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your account] and tap Delete Account. Then, go back to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account and follow the steps to add your account again. This might also fix the sync issue and update the read status of your emails.

I hope this helps :)

Adonis-Tech,

I am experiencing the same problem as the OP, though the problem didn't arise for me until I updated to 14.7.1 on my iPhone 15 Pro. My specific problem is that messages are not being marked as READ once they've been opened on my iPhone. To get them to be marked as READ, I either have to force it by clicking "EDIT" and then selecting "Mark as Read", or I close the Mail app and reopen it and then they are marked as READ. I even reinstalled 14.7.1 and the problem still persists. I have also tried both of your proposed fixes above, but neither worked. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Dave
