Blocked mail not going to trash – still...

I asked a question a while ago but think it was locked so I'm repeating it again here in case anyone can help:

I know someone already posted this in April 2022 but I am still having the same issue. When I set blocked mail to go straight to the trash it's not. Does anyone know if Apple have fixed this and how I can set it up? Original thread is here Blocked Mail not going to Trash - Apple Community

I think @leroydouglas replied and asked if I was on Ventura 13.2

I'm on the latest OS, 13.5 and this has been happening on each OS update for some time. Apple Support can't seem to get to the bottom of it either...

Thanks

If you set up a mail rule to move certain mail to the trash on iCloud using Safari, the mail is moved to the trash folder on all devices. If you set up the same rule to move mail to the trash in the Mail App, it is not moved to the trash on any of your devices and instead goes into the junk mail folder. This is not just misleading, it's inconsistent and seems like a bug to me.

This was very helpful. The primary email that I've been using since the first day of Apple mac.com mail service gets tons of junk mail now. I want to keep using it because it's simply myfirstname@mac.com and I've been using it for 24 years. Most of the junk is addressed to myfirstname@icloud.com and @me.com and I've tried mail rules in Apple mail on my Mac to get rid of those, but it has never worked. After reading your response, I set those rules at icloud.com via Safari to mark as read and move to trash any mail to myfirstname@icloud.com and @me.com. Now all of the mail addressed to myfirstname@icloud.com and @me.com get marked as read and goes to the trash. My junk mail folder is now manageable. All mail to myfirstname@mac.com arrives in my inbox. THANKS!

What follows is only my personal understanding.

It appears Apple believes not everybody is a thorough and diligent as you are in check every single e-mail

Then, they gave you and I the opportunity to review the message before deleting.

It gives you and I the chance to recover from a possible error by our collective selves

Should that be not to your liking and wish to request from Apple to change the Wording specific to " Move to Trash " in the " Junk Mail >> Blocked " setting

Then have a few suggestions ;

1 - Get Support Choose a product and we’ll find you the best solution.Start now and open an Apple Support Ticket as they are Apple Employees to deal will these types of issues .

2 - Product Feedback - Apple and make it known to Apple regarding this ongoing issue

Perhaps if enough people take the time to lodge their displeasure - Apple will change things in the successor to Ventura to be released sometime this Fall

I am puzzled by how this works for you. From your description it sounds like you are sending all of your email straight to trash.

I've only created rules on icloud via Safari to send myfirstname@icloud.com and myfirstname@me.com to the trash. All of those emails do end up in my trash folder and not my junk folder or inbox. Since I have never used the email addresses ending in me.com or icloud.com, anything sent to those are always unsolicited, and the rules set in iCloud via Safari do work to move them to the trash folder. I have not set a rule to send myfirstname@mac.com to the trash. Mail addressed to myfirstname@mac.com still comes to my inbox or is filtered to my junk folder. None is sent to trash. This helps me, since the bulk of my unsolicited emails are addressed to myfirstname@icloud.com. Hope this helps you.

I'd looked into this before, and it really doesn't function as a workaround. The mail filtering on iCloud is completely different than on Mac Mail. Rules you make on your Mac aren't reflected on iCloud, and the iCloud interface doesn't include an option for moving mail from blocked email addresses to the trash as Mail does. I suspect the disconnect between the various ways this is handled has something to do with why it doesn't work properly, but that's only a theory.

Still wonder if anyone has gotten any answers from Apple. I'm guessing not, as some of the posters in this thread who said they were working with tech support haven't volunteered to share what they were told.

Responding to Justanothergeordie 📪 Email Blocked / Junk

Hello ,

I thought of a few things to check :

If you use an additional email program or website , make sure that it's not set to delete mail from the server automatically . If you add a sub-folder , use " my folders " , for example … my non-iCloud email (and internet service provider) has three lines after each mailbox , containing options like " add folder " . It doesn't have a " junk" folder by default so I added one but it appeared as a sub-folder under " inbox " , I deleted it and used

" my folders " so that the junk mail wouldn't go to my inbox .

Short addresses & passwords are nice but , for what it's worth , I changed my address & password that I had used for 15 years after a data breach . Before that , I had more fraudulent email than legitimate ones , today I have only one persistent junk email .

My rule for newsletters in my other email account sends it to junk , so I'll tell the website to send it to my iCloud account . My point is that It's been well worth it to have changed my address & password .

I've enclosed screenshots of the server question and iCloud rules .

☘️ Good luck , I hope you find a solution , it sounds awful what you're going through !

It goes to your junk folder just like it does for Outlook, Yahoo ...etc

Thanks for replying, so just to get this straight:

In Mail > Settings > Junk Mail > Blocked tab, I have "Enable blocked mail filtering" checked and underneath also "Move to the bin" checked.

This means any mail I have identified as junk by right clicking on it and selecting "Block contact" should go to the bin.

But it's not. It stays in the Junk folder...

Aug 13, 2023 7:33 AM in response to Owl-53

Okay thanks, a little more than misleading I think as I've been blocking every single contact which sends me junk mail and expecting them to go to the bin/trash until I read this.

So the only point in blocking a sender is so it doesn't end up in your Inbox?

Surely it would be better if "Blocked senders go to the trash" actually worked? That way I would have fewer emails in my Junk folder to check...
