syncing old iphone with new MacOS

I have an iPhone 6s that I am trying to get synced to my computer without losing everything on my iPhone.

I recently upgraded from High Sierra to Monterey. I needed to purchase some 64-bit software in order to do this upgrade that I couldn't afford until recently. My iPhone is running iOS 15.7.8

First question: why can't I sync -- meaning files on iPhone gets merged with files on my computer? I do not like that if I sync my phone, it will erase everything and replace what is on the computer.

Second question: I went through all my music and created a playlist on my computer that has all the music on my iPhone. So when I go to sync, it says it will erase everything, photos, contacts, etc. If I only have music checked for syncing, will still erase everything else on my iPhone?

Third question: There is a album on my iTunes that says I am not authorized to play. I have re-authorized my computer three times but it keeps coming up as I am not authorized for that album - within minutes of authorizing. How do I correct this? I only have 2 devices of 5 potential devices authorized.

Once I get the music synced, I will work on the photos next. Can I work with backups to access photos to get them on my computer from my iPhone? What is the best recommend way to do that?

I have been told my iPhone 6S will no longer work on the Verizon network after this year so I am working to get everything synced before I upgrade my phone. I am a hold out as I did NOT want to lose the jack and be forced into EarPods.

Thanks in advance for the help!

  1. The “sync” just more or less means creating a backup (sync the backup on your Mac with your iPhone) of your iPhone on your Mac.
  2. If it says It’ll erase everything, including photos and contacts and everything, it’ll definitely do.
  3. I’m afraid I cannot help you with that since I never used iTunes. See in the footnotes for an idea why this does not work.

Footnotes:

Your iPhone is no longer officially supported with new Software releases, so getting a new one definitely is a good thing. You can even stick with your headphone jack, since apple sells an adapter from lightning to headphone jack.

Since you said that you “purchased some 64 bit software” in order to upgrade your MacOS version, it sounds like your mac does not officially support this version of macOS. This could be the reason for the failing authorization. I also recommend you using a mac which officially does support the newest version of macOS. By the way, Monterey isn’t the newest macOS version. The newest stable release is Ventura (macOS 13), and this fall Sonoma (macOS 14) takes the place of the newest (stable) macOS release.

Apple also provides a handy setup Assistent right when setting up your new iPhone which automatically puts the data from your old phone to the new one, so there is theoretically no need for backing up your iPhone before making the transition to a new iPhone.

Hope that helps!

Yes, my Mac will support up to Monterey which is what I am using. I cannot go past Monterey with my older iMac.

Monterey is still supported by Apple.

The software I needed was Adobe Acrobat Pro. I refuse to pay for a subscription and I am a musician that scans all my music to my iPad.

How does that handy assistant work between iPhones? Won't I still eventually need to sync and probably lose everything on my NEW iPhone when I do even if using the assistant?

I also have an older iPad to work on next, although I am planning on buying a new iPad once I get everything else situated.
