Why do you need to reinstall macOS ?

Those who know me, I want to start a discussion with a simple question. Why do you need to reinstall macOS ?

You may find it useful to do so after some long time use and after many OS updates but my actual question is like following :

We know that Since System Integration Protection makes sure that OS files are kept safe and no one other than Apple can replace it.

So the questions becomes like that what is the difference between your current macOS computer and the one you reinstall and recover your files from a backup.

If the only difference is system configuration settings you made, why there is no option like "reset (user) settings" in the recovery options instead of "reinstall macOS " and waiting so much time ?

You don't have to if you have an Apple silicon Mac or a Mac with a T2 Security Chip.

Good question. Creating a dummy user account is often recommended to troubleshoot obscure errors that might be related to user prefs.

Many apps have an option to reset prefs if they misbehave. But then the user has to remember all the the old setting s/he might have to restore. I have one such app and I have a lengthy memo of custom settings my workflow requires to work properly.

On the system level this might get trickier and the user (and other users on that Mac) might get annoyed when all their old application registrations and settings are nuked.

That specific question is best asked of Apple
